AI Video Generation: Market, Competitive Landscape & Application Commercialization
Deep-Dive Industry Report — July 2026
Executive Summary
AI video generation has crossed the threshold from demo-stage novelty to production-grade infrastructure. The market is being pulled forward by a single dominant force: short-form AI-generated drama ("AI manga drama"), which alone reached an estimated RMB 168 billion ($23B) in 2025 and is projected to exceed RMB 240 billion ($33B) in 2026. This one application has reshaped the economics of the entire sector — driving GPU demand, compressing pricing, and forcing every model provider to compete on production reliability rather than benchmark scores.
Three structural observations frame this report:
- The revenue is real. Kling AI reached $500M ARR by April 2026. Synthesia crossed $150M ARR. ByteDance's Jimeng AI surpassed RMB 1 billion (~$148M) in monthly revenue. Seedance 2.0 is so oversubscribed that short-drama studios sign annual commitment contracts in the tens of millions of RMB just to secure queue priority.
- But the profit is not. Video inference costs remain dramatically higher than text or image generation. No major player has demonstrated sustained unit economics where revenue fully covers inference + R&D + customer acquisition.
- The application layer, not the model layer, is where value accrues. The model providers with the deepest integration into a specific end-use vertical — not the ones with the highest benchmark scores — are capturing the most revenue.
1. Market Overview
1.1 Global Market Size
| Source | 2025 Value | Projected | CAGR | Horizon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fortune Business Insights | $717M | $3.35B | 18.8% | 2034 |
| Grand View Research | $789M | $3.44B | 20.3% | 2033 |
| Goldman Sachs (est.) | ~$3B | ~$29B | ~57% | 2030 |
Important caveat: Third-party estimates systematically understate the market because they use traditional "video generator tool" category frameworks. They do not capture the AI short-drama production value chain, platform-advertising revenue generated by AI video, or API consumption from enterprise clients. Goldman Sachs' estimate of a $29B market by 2030 — implying nearly 10x growth over 5 years — is likely closer to reality, driven by the scenarios analyzed in Section 3.
1.2 China Market Dynamics
China is the world's most active AI video market, driven by structural advantages absent elsewhere:
- Integrated short-video ecosystems. Douyin (TikTok China) and Kuaishou together reach over 1 billion DAU. Both platforms own the full stack: training data → model → creation tool → editing → publishing → monetization.
- AI short drama as a mass-market product. ByteDance's AI manga drama daily consumption surpassed RMB 70 million (~$10M/day) in March 2026, exceeding human-produced short drama for the first time.
- Capital intensity. ByteDance's 2025 AI-related capex reached RMB 150 billion (~$21B). Kuaishou budgeted RMB 11 billion in new AI spend for 2026.
- Regulatory momentum. China's Cyberspace Administration has begun enforcing AI content labeling rules (see Section 5), creating compliance costs that advantage large platforms.
1.3 The Cost Disruption
The unit economics of video creation have been fundamentally altered:
| Metric | Traditional Production | AI Generation (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 5-second HD clip | ||
| Short drama episode | ~RMB 100,000–1,000,000 | ~RMB 10,000–100,000 |
| Production cycle | Weeks to months | Hours to days |
| Minimum viable team | 5–15 people | 1–2 people |
This is not a marginal efficiency improvement. It is a 100–1,000x cost reduction that enables entirely new content categories (personalized video ads at scale, infinite A/B testing of creative, real-time interactive video) that were economically impossible before.
2. Midstream: Model & Product Competitive Landscape
2.1 Four Structural Categories
The AI video model/provider layer can be classified by competitive moat, not just product quality:
Category A: Platform-Integrated Players (Strongest Moat)
These companies control training data, creator ecosystems, distribution channels, and monetization in a closed loop.
| Player | Model(s) | Parent | Key Metrics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seedance / Jimeng AI | Seedance 2.0, 2.5 | ByteDance | Jimeng MAU ~13.5M (Q1 2026); monthly revenue >RMB 1B; Seedance 2.5 generates native 30s 4K |
| Kling AI | Kling 3.0, Video 2.6 | Kuaishou (spinning out) | $500M ARR (Apr 2026); 45M+ global users; $18–20B pre-IPO valuation; raised $2.8B |
How they compete differently:
- ByteDance (Seedance/Jimeng): "Ecosystem-first." Subsidized consumer pricing (as low as RMB 0.10–0.19 per clip), monetized through the advertising and content ecosystem downstream. Seedance integrates with Jianying (CapCut) and Douyin (TikTok China) for a one-click creation-to-publishing pipeline. API served through Volcano Engine for enterprise.
- Kuaishou (Kling): "Revenue-first." Focused on professional creators (Prosumer/B2B) who pay for quality. Higher per-unit pricing but stronger per-user revenue. Kling generated RMB 1.04 billion (~$153M) in full-year 2025 revenue, reached $500M ARR by April 2026. Independent spinoff and planned 2027 Hong Kong IPO.
Category B: Professional Creative Tools
These compete on workflow integration and production control, not ecosystem breadth.
| Player | Latest Model | Valuation | Total Raised | Positioning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runway | Gen-4.5 | $5.3B (Feb 2026) | $860M | Hollywood/advertising creative suite; Lionsgate partnership; world model R&D |
| Vidu (Shengshu Tech) | Vidu Q3 | Undisclosed (B-round ~RMB 2B) | >RMB 2.6B (~$360M) | "Built for drama"; #2 globally on Artificial Analysis; 90%+ penetration among China's film/TV content producers |
Key distinction: Runway competes on brand and creative-tool depth in Western markets. Vidu competes on technical benchmarks and vertical penetration in China's film/drama production industry. Vidu Q3 ranked #1 in China and #2 globally on Artificial Analysis' video model leaderboard (behind xAI Grok, ahead of Runway Gen-4.5, Google Veo 3.1, and OpenAI Sora 2).
Category C: Mass-Market Consumer Platforms
| Player | Model | Valuation | Users | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PixVerse (Aishi Tech) | V5.6, R1 | Unicorn ($3B C-round) | 100M+ users, 16M MAU | Largest user base; first real-time video model (R1); #2 globally on Artificial Analysis |
| Pika Labs | Pika 2.0+ | ~$500–700M (2024 B-round) | 500K+ weekly active | Consumer-social focus; iPhone app with meme/viral templates |
| Hailuo AI (MiniMax) | Hailuo 2.3 | Listed (HKEX Jan 2026) | Multi-product | Multimodal platform (video + voice + music + code) |
Category D: Big Tech Defensive Plays
| Player | Model | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Veo 3.1 | Premium quality benchmark; Gemini + Google Cloud ecosystem lock-in | |
| OpenAI | Sora 2 (shut down) | Brand halo; never achieved commercial scale |
| Adobe | Firefly Video | Creative Cloud integration for existing professional user base |
| xAI | Grok Video | #1 on Artificial Analysis; not yet broadly accessible |
2.2 Competitive Verdict
The platform-integrated players (ByteDance, Kuaishou) hold structural advantages that pure-play model companies cannot replicate: proprietary training data from billions of videos, zero-cost distribution to billions of users, and the ability to subsidize model inference through platform advertising revenue. The most defensible positions for independent companies are (a) deep vertical integration into a specific production workflow (Vidu in Chinese film/drama, Synthesia in enterprise training) or (b) owning the largest consumer user base (PixVerse).
3. Downstream: Application Scenarios — Commercialization Deep Dive
This section is the core of the report. Six application scenarios are analyzed with market size, adoption data, revenue models, key players, and forward outlook.
3.1 AI Short Drama / AI Manga Drama
The single largest commercial application of AI video generation in 2026.
Market Size & Trajectory
| Metric | 2025 | 2026 (Est.) |
|---|---|---|
| China AI manga drama market | RMB 168B (~$23B) | RMB 240B+ (~$33B+) |
| ByteDance daily AI drama consumption | — | >RMB 70M/day (Mar 2026) |
| Kuaishou daily AI drama consumption | — | >RMB 15M/day |
| Traditional short drama production cost | RMB 500K–2M/episode | — |
| AI short drama production cost | — | RMB 10K–100K/episode |
| Production cycle reduction | — | 50–70% shorter |
ByteDance's AI drama daily consumption crossed RMB 70 million in March 2026, exceeding human-produced short drama for the first time. This is an inflection point: the largest short-video platform in the world now generates more consumption from AI-produced content than human-produced content in the drama category.
How the Value Chain Works
Traditional short drama production involves 11+ discrete steps: scriptwriting → casting → location scouting → filming → editing → VFX → sound design → dubbing → color grading → packaging → distribution. AI compresses this to roughly 5 steps: script → AI scene generation → AI editing/assembly → AI dubbing/sound → platform distribution.
Chinese online literature platform COL (中文在线) reported reducing its production cycle by 70% and cutting costs by 50% using its proprietary AI toolchain built on top of video generation models.
Revenue Model
- Platform ad-revenue share. The dominant model. Platforms (Douyin, Kuaishou) monetize AI drama through in-feed advertising and share revenue with production studios.
- Pay-per-view / subscription. Emerging on dedicated short-drama apps.
- API consumption. Studios pay model providers (Seedance, Kling, Vidu) per generation. Seedance 2.0's demand so far exceeds supply that studios sign annual contracts worth tens of millions of RMB to secure priority access to GPU queue.
Key Players in This Vertical
- Production side: COL (中文在线), Sony Pictures, Tencent Animation, iQIYI, Mango TV, Yuewen Group, CCTV Animation
- Model supply side: Seedance (dominant, especially after 2.0), Kling, Vidu (claims 90%+ penetration among film/TV content producers)
- Platform side: Douyin, Kuaishou
Forward Outlook
This vertical will continue to be the primary demand driver for AI video generation through at least 2027. The next catalyst is "AI-native series" — multi-episode productions generated entirely by AI with consistent characters, settings, and narrative arcs across episodes. Seedance 2.5's native 30-second 4K generation (June 2026) and 50-reference-image multimodal input are building blocks for this.
3.2 Advertising & Marketing
The most mature B2B revenue stream with measurable ROI data.
Adoption & Scale
- 90% of advertisers use some form of generative AI in creative workflows (2026), up from ~55% in early 2025 (Digital Applied).
- 91% of Meta advertisers use AI optimization (Omneky, 2026).
- 40% of digital ad creative is now AI-generated (Digital Applied, 2026).
- AI-generated TikTok ads see 2.4x higher completion rates than manually produced equivalents (Omneky).
- Performance Max (Google's AI-driven campaign type) accounts for over 60% of Google Ads spend.
Measurable ROI
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average ROAS improvement (first 90 days with AI creative) | +32% | Omneky platform data |
| Incremental revenue per $1 invested in AI ad tech | $8.44 | Salesforce State of Marketing 2025 |
| CAC reduction for AI advertisers | -40% | Omneky |
| AI-generated variations win rate in A/B tests (50+ variants) | 68% | Omneky platform data |
| Production cost reduction | -32% | Deloitte |
| Speed-to-launch improvement | +37% | Workfront |
| Marketers using AI report revenue increase | +41% | SQ Magazine 2026 |
The Consumer Trust Gap
There is a measurable and significant negative perception effect when consumers identify ads as AI-generated:
| Metric | Change When Perceived as AI-Generated |
|---|---|
| Premium perception | -17% |
| Inspiration score | -19% |
| Purchase intent | -14% |
This creates a strategic tension: AI video dramatically improves production economics, but overtly synthetic creative underperforms on brand metrics. The implication is that AI video in advertising works best when it is invisible — used for volume, testing, and production efficiency — while human creative direction remains essential for brand-defining campaigns.
Key Players
- Model providers serving advertising: Seedance (via Volcano Engine API), Kling, Runway, PixVerse, Vidu
- Ad-focused AI platforms: Creatify (e-commerce ad video), Omneky (AI creative optimization), Sovran (video ad creation benchmarks)
- Platform-native tools: Meta Advantage+ Creative, Google Ads AI, TikTok Symphony, Tencent Ads Miaosi (妙思)
Revenue Model
- API consumption (per-generation pricing)
- SaaS subscriptions (dedicated ad creative platforms)
- Platform take rate (ad spend flowing through AI-optimized campaigns)
3.3 E-Commerce & Livestream Commerce
High-conversion, operationally intensive — AI video is transforming both sides of the marketplace.
Key Metrics
| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| AI virtual streamer livestream completion rate | 68% | Industry data (vs. 43% average) |
| Conversion uplift from interactive AI video on product pages | +27 percentage points | Industry data |
| Single AI avatar livestream sales (one event) | $7.6M to 13M viewers | LinkedIn/industry report |
| E-commerce businesses using AI | 78.3% | Marketing statistics 2026 |
Use Cases
-
AI virtual streamers (直播带货). The most advanced use case. Two AI avatars generated $7.6M in sales over a 6-hour livestream with zero human involvement. AI streamers can operate 24/7, respond to comments in real time, and dynamically adjust product presentation based on viewer engagement signals.
-
Product video at scale. An online store with 200+ SKUs can generate lifestyle product videos for every SKU, in multiple scenarios and for multiple customer personas, at a fraction of traditional production cost. This was previously economically impossible.
-
Personalized shopping experiences. AI avatars serving as personalized shopping assistants — a customer uploads a selfie, specifies preferences, and the AI recommends products with generated demonstration videos.
-
A/B testing at scale. Generate hundreds of product video variations and test them against each other to identify winning creative. This is the tactical application that produces the most measurable ROI.
Revenue Model
- Per-generation API fees for product video
- SaaS subscriptions for dedicated e-commerce AI video platforms (e.g., Leadde at $19/month for unlimited generation)
- Platform revenue share on AI livestream GMV
3.4 Film, Television & Professional Production
Smaller in volume than short drama, but higher in per-project value and strategic significance.
Key Deals & Milestones
- Lionsgate + Runway (September 2024). First Hollywood studio–AI model partnership. Runway trained a custom model on Lionsgate's catalog of 20,000+ film and TV titles. The model is exclusive to Lionsgate for pre-production (storyboarding, VFX pre-visualization) and post-production workflows. Lionsgate Vice Chair Michael Burns: "Several of our filmmakers are already excited about its potential applications."
- James Cameron joined Stability AI's board. Cameron described the intersection of generative AI and CGI as "the next wave" of film technology.
- Vidu covers >90% of China's film/TV content producers. Clients include Sony Pictures, Tencent Animation, iQIYI, Mango TV, CCTV Animation, Yuewen Group.
- Seedance 2.0 triggered Hollywood alarm. BBC News (February 2026): "The Chinese AI app sending Hollywood into a panic." The model's "image-to-voice" and "scene reconstruction" capabilities — generating plausible audio from silent images and completing occluded parts of scenes from partial references — raised both creative possibility and copyright concern.
How AI Video Is Used in Professional Production
- Pre-visualization and storyboarding. Generate rough scene renders from script descriptions for director/DP alignment before shooting.
- VFX pre-vis and temp composites. Replace or supplement traditional pre-vis with AI-generated sequences.
- Background and environment generation. Generate establishing shots, crowd scenes, and environmental backgrounds that would be expensive to shoot practically.
- Post-production augmentation. De-aging, style transfer, object removal/replacement, and other traditionally labor-intensive VFX tasks.
Limitations
Professional film production demands frame-level control, consistent character appearance across shots, precise camera movement, and seamless integration with live-action footage. Current AI video models are strongest at generating individual impressive clips but weakest at the controlled, repeatable, editable output that professional post-production pipelines require. Runway's differentiation — emphasis on controllable tools rather than pure generation quality — is a direct response to this gap.
Revenue Model
- Enterprise licensing (custom trained models, e.g., Lionsgate-Runway deal)
- Per-seat SaaS for production studios
- Project-based professional services
3.5 UGC & Social Content Creation
The largest user base, but the most difficult to monetize directly.
Scale
- Jimeng AI (ByteDance): 13.5M MAU (Q1 2026); spiked to ~45M MAU during Spring Festival after Seedance 2.0 launch
- PixVerse: 100M+ total users, 16M MAU across 175 countries
- Kling AI: 45M+ total users, 12M+ MAU
- CapCut (Jianying): 800M+ global MAU — the largest video editing app, increasingly infused with AI generation capabilities
Platform Dynamics
The most important strategic fact about UGC AI video is the ByteDance pipeline: Jimeng AI generates → CapCut edits → Douyin/TikTok publishes. This is a closed creation-to-distribution loop that no independent company can replicate. In Q1 2025, 37% of Jimeng's new users were acquired through this pipeline.
ByteDance's strategy is transparent: subsidize AI video generation to near-zero consumer cost (as low as RMB 0.10/clip), make it effortless to publish, and monetize through the advertising that runs against the resulting content. The AI generation tool is a content supply-chain investment, not a standalone profit center.
AI-Native UGC Trends
- "AI transformation" effects. Viral templates like PixVerse's "Venom transformation" or Pika's selfie-to-character effects drive adoption through social sharing.
- AI-powered content automation. Platforms like OpusClip (10M+ creators, $215M valuation, SoftBank-backed) automatically clip long videos into platform-optimized shorts — a different but adjacent AI-video use case.
- Authenticity backlash. Consumer enthusiasm for AI-generated creator content fell from 60% (2023) to 26% (2025), per Billion Dollar Boy research. Platforms are responding with mandatory AI labeling (see Section 5).
Revenue Model
- Freemium subscriptions (consumer pays for higher quality, longer duration, watermark removal, faster generation)
- Platform ad revenue (the ByteDance model — AI generation as a content supply investment)
- Viral template → app download → subscription conversion funnel (Pika, PixVerse)
3.6 Enterprise Training & Corporate Communication
The most profitable per-customer segment, dominated by AI avatar videos rather than generative video models.
Market Leader: Synthesia
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| ARR | ~$150M (mid-2026); on track for $200M in 2026 |
| Valuation | $4B (Jan 2026 Series E) |
| Total raised | $536M+ |
| Customers | 65,000+ (including 90% of Fortune 100, 95% of DAX 40) |
| Revenue from enterprise | 70% |
| Key use case driver | Multilingual training video (40% of all videos are translations) |
Synthesia's business model is instructive: it is not competing on video generation quality benchmarks. It competes on replacing an existing enterprise cost center — corporate video production for training, onboarding, and internal communications — with a dramatically cheaper, faster, and more scalable alternative. An enterprise that previously spent $50K–200K per training video (crew, talent, studio, post-production) can produce equivalent content for a SaaS subscription.
Other Players
- HeyGen: $500M valuation (2024), 40,000+ paying business customers, 140+ languages. Partnered with Seedance 2.0 for higher-quality avatar video.
- Colossyan, D-ID, DeepBrain AI, Hour One, Elai.io: Niche enterprise use cases (sales outreach, personalized video, accessibility).
Emerging: Interactive AI Video Agents
Synthesia's 2026 product roadmap points toward "AI video agents" — interactive avatars that can conduct role-play training sessions, answer employee questions about company knowledge bases, and provide personalized coaching. This transforms the category from "video production tool" to "enterprise learning platform," expanding TAM significantly.
Revenue Model
- Enterprise SaaS subscriptions (seat-based or usage-based)
- Professional services (custom avatar creation, integration)
- Expansion revenue through multilingual localization
4. Capital & Funding
4.1 Key Financing Events (2024–2026)

| Apr 2025 | Runway | D | $308M | $3B → $3.3B | General Atlantic |
| Mar 2025 | OpusClip | B | $20M | $215M | SoftBank Vision Fund 2 |
| Jun 2024 | Pika Labs | B | $80M | ~$500–700M | Spark Capital |
| Jun 2024 | HeyGen | A | $60M | $500M | — |
| Mar 2024 | MiniMax | — | $600M | $2.5B | Alibaba |
4.2 Capital Trends
-
Total funding in AI video nearly doubled YoY. Global funding for AI-related video companies reached $3.08B in 2025, up 94.6% from $1.58B in 2024 (Crunchbase).
-
Late-stage concentration. The top 5 rounds (Luma $900M, Kling $2.8B, Runway $315M, PixVerse $300M, Synthesia $200M) account for the vast majority of capital deployed. Seed and Series A activity is thinning — the market is consolidating around known winners.
-
Chinese tech majors are investing across the board. Alibaba has invested in MiniMax, PixVerse, and Shengshu Tech. Tencent joined Kling's Pre-IPO round. This is not financial portfolio investing — it is strategic positioning for cloud compute consumption, content ecosystem integration, and e-commerce/advertising synergies.
-
Sovereign capital is entering. Saudi PIF's HUMAIN led Luma's $900M round. This signals that AI video is now viewed as strategic infrastructure, not just venture-scale software.
-
IPO window opening. MiniMax listed on HKEX in January 2026. Kling plans a 2027 Hong Kong IPO. Runway's financing cadence (Series D in April 2025, Series E in February 2026) suggests preparation for public markets.
5. Platform Policy & Regulatory Environment
5.1 AI Content Labeling Requirements by Platform (2026)
| Platform | Requirement | Detection | Penalty |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Mandatory label for realistic AI-generated people/scenes | C2PA auto-detection + creator self-label | Content removal; labeled content still eligible for Creator Rewards |
| YouTube | Mandatory creator disclosure for "altered or synthetic content" | Upload-time declaration | Demonetization, content label, reach limitation |
| Meta (FB/IG) | Disclosure required for synthetic media on political/social topics | — | Content removal |
| Google Ads | "AI Generated" label required on all synthetic content | — | Ad rejection |
5.2 Regulatory Frameworks
- EU AI Act, Article 50: Enforceable from August 2, 2026. Penalties up to €35 million or 7% of global annual revenue for undisclosed AI-generated content distributed in the EU.
- China: The Cyberspace Administration (CAC) enforces the Administrative Measures on the Labeling of AI-Generated Synthetic Content. In April 2026, the CAC publicly sanctioned CapCut (Jianying), Jimeng AI, and Maoxiang (猫箱) for inadequate AI content labeling — demonstrating enforcement is active, not theoretical.
5.3 Strategic Implications
Compliance is becoming a competitive moat. Platforms with the technical infrastructure to auto-detect, label, and trace AI content (C2PA watermarking, SynthID, content provenance systems) will face lower regulatory risk and higher advertiser trust. Companies that treat compliance as an afterthought — or that lack the resources to build it — face escalating platform enforcement and regulatory penalties.
6. Strategic Outlook: Key Judgments
6.1 The Platform-Integrated Model Is Winning
ByteDance and Kuaishou control the full value chain: training data → model → creation tool → editing → publishing → monetization. This closed loop gives them structural cost advantages (subsidize inference through ad revenue) and distribution advantages (zero-cost user acquisition) that standalone model providers cannot match.
Implication for independent companies: Compete on depth, not breadth. Vidu's strategy of penetrating 90%+ of Chinese film/TV content producers — becoming the default tool for a specific production workflow — is more defensible than trying to build a general-purpose consumer platform that competes with ByteDance.
6.2 AI Short Drama Is the Economic Engine
This single application vertical is consuming the majority of inference capacity and generating the majority of API revenue for the major model providers. The numbers are stark: ByteDance's daily AI drama consumption exceeded RMB 70 million in March 2026, and studios are signing multimillion-RMB annual commitments for GPU priority.
Implication: Any company building AI video infrastructure should prioritize this vertical. Any investor evaluating AI video companies should ask: "What is your short-drama strategy?"
6.3 The Consumer Trust Problem Is Real and Measurable
When consumers perceive content as AI-generated, purchase intent drops 14%, premium perception drops 17%, and inspiration drops 19% (Digital Applied, 2026). Consumer enthusiasm for AI creator content fell from 60% to 26% in two years. Platforms are responding with mandatory labeling, which will make AI content more identifiable over time.
Implication: The highest-value AI video applications are those where the AI is invisible — used for production efficiency, volume, and testing, while human creative direction maintains the authentic surface. Enterprise training (Synthesia) and B2B ad production (APIs) are less exposed to this trust problem than consumer-facing UGC.
6.4 Revenue Is Real; Profit Is Not
Kling's $500M ARR, Seedance's oversubscribed API, Synthesia's $150M ARR — these prove that customers will pay for AI video at scale. But no major player has demonstrated that inference costs + R&D + customer acquisition can be sustainably covered by revenue. Kuaishou's plan to spend RMB 11 billion in new AI capex for 2026 — against Kling's ~RMB 7 billion annualized revenue — illustrates the gap.
Implication: The industry is in a land-grab phase. Companies are prioritizing revenue growth and market share over unit economics, betting that (a) inference costs will continue to decline and (b) scale will eventually produce operating leverage. This is rational if the cost curves continue their current trajectory, but it creates vulnerability if GPU supply tightens or if cloud pricing does not decline as expected.
6.5 World Models Are the Next Frontier
Multiple leading companies are signaling that "generating video" is an intermediate step toward "understanding and simulating physical reality." Runway is pre-training "world models" for applications in medicine, climate, energy, and robotics. Shengshu Tech (Vidu) explicitly frames its strategy as "from video generation to general world models." Luma AI's Ray3 is marketed as the "first reasoning video model." ByteDance's Seedance 2.5 supports 50 multimodal reference inputs, moving toward rich world-state representation.
Implication: The companies that successfully transition from "video generator" to "world model platform" will have TAMs that extend far beyond content creation — into robotics, autonomous systems, scientific simulation, and physical AI. This is a 5–10 year horizon, but the positioning is happening now.
